ChatGPT vs Claude: which should a small business pay for in 2026?

Price will not decide this, because the plans mirror each other

As of July 2026, ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20/mo (Claude drops to $17/mo on annual billing). The team tiers match too: ChatGPT Business and Claude Team Standard are both $20 per user per month on annual billing, $25 monthly.

Both vendors exclude business-plan data from model training by default. Both also repriced within the last few months (OpenAI cut Business from $25 to $20 on April 2, 2026), so confirm current numbers before committing to annual billing.

For a solo owner, ChatGPT is the better generalist and Claude is the better writer

ChatGPT Plus covers more ground. Voice mode for hands-busy days, image generation for quick product shots and social posts, a large library of custom GPTs, and agent features that can browse and complete multi-step tasks.

If your week is a mix of research, marketing images, quick math, and odd jobs, Plus is the safer single subscription. Its current flagship models (the GPT-5.5 family) are strong at all of it.

Claude Pro earns the seat when your work is mostly words and files: quotes, customer emails, policies, proposals, long documents. Its writing needs less editing and it follows tone instructions more reliably, which matters when the output goes to a customer under your name.

Pro includes Projects (persistent workspaces where you load your own reference files) plus Claude Code and Cowork for working directly on files and folders. If you want AI that drafts from your actual price list instead of guessing, this setup is the stronger starting point.

For a team of 2-4 people, ChatGPT Business wins before you compare features

Claude Team requires 5 seats. If you are 3 people, you still pay for 5: 5 x $20 = $100/mo.

ChatGPT Business starts at 2 seats, so the same 3-person shop pays 3 x $20 = $60/mo and gets the things that matter at team size: a shared workspace, admin controls, SSO, and no training on your data by default.

Unless a specific Claude capability is why you are buying in the first place, the seat math settles this bracket.

You can also mix: 2 ChatGPT Business seats for the team plus 1 Claude Pro for whoever writes the most. That is $57/mo and covers both strengths.

At 5+ seats it is a real contest, and your existing tools decide it

Both team plans now search across your connected tools. Claude Team's enterprise search covers Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365, and Slack; ChatGPT Business claims 60+ connectors.

If your business lives in Google Workspace or Slack, run a 1-month trial of each against your real documents and keep the one that answers correctly more often. Claude's Premium seat ($100-125/mo) only makes sense for heavy daily users; Standard seats carry about 1.25x Pro usage, which is enough for most.

Flip the training toggle before you paste anything private

On the personal plans, both companies use your conversations to improve their models unless you opt out. ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro have training on by default; turn it off under Settings, Data Controls.

Claude's consumer plans ask you to choose, and if you leave training on, Anthropic retains that data for up to 5 years. The business tiers (ChatGPT Business, Claude Team) exclude your data from training by default, which by itself is a reason for even a 2-person shop to skip sharing one Plus login.

Neither one knows your business, and that is the actual risk

The failure mode that costs you money is not picking the wrong vendor. Both tools will guess your prices, your policies, or your stock levels in front of a customer, and sound sure while they do it.

Out of the box, both will do exactly that, because they know nothing about your business. Both also have usage caps that can stall you mid-task on a heavy day, and both change plans and prices often enough that this article needed re-verification twice while writing.

The fix is the same on either platform: give the AI your rules, voice, and numbers as files it must read before drafting, and keep a human approving what goes out. That is what a business knowledge base is, and building one is the first thing we do at Bamboo Digital.
