Claude is a general assistant, and the useful tier starts at $17 a month
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. You type, it drafts, summarizes, calculates, and researches. What makes it interesting for a business owner is not the chat box.
It is what sits around the chat box: Projects that hold your files, connectors that reach into the tools you already pay for, and two agents (Claude Code and Cowork) that do multi-step work instead of describing it.
Current plans, verified against Anthropic's pricing page in July 2026:
For a solo owner, Pro is the practical starting point. $20/mo x 12 = $240/yr, less than one hour of most professional services. Team only makes sense once you have 5 people, because 5 seats is the minimum.
Projects are where Claude stops guessing about your business
A Project is a workspace with its own chat history, its own custom instructions, and a knowledge base of files you upload: your price list, refund policy, supplier terms, examples of how you write. Every chat inside that Project reads those files before answering.
On paid plans, retrieval expands the capacity up to 10x, so a real document set fits, not just a page or two.
This is the single feature that changes Claude from a clever intern into something you can trust with customer-facing words. An AI without your files answers from industry averages. An AI with your refund policy quotes your refund policy. The same principle, applied more rigorously across a whole business, is what a business knowledge base is.
Connectors are built on MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard, and they let Claude read from and, with your approval, act inside live systems. The directory now covers hundreds of tools: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Airtable, and more.
Each one connects through OAuth and carries its own terms, so you decide what Claude can see, account by account.
In May 2026 Anthropic shipped a Claude for Small Business plugin at no extra cost on Pro, Max, and Team: 15 skills and 15 ready-made workflows across finance, operations, and marketing, wired to 7 launch connectors including QuickBooks and Google Workspace.
It is a genuinely useful starting kit, though the workflows are generic until you feed them your own numbers and rules.
Claude Code and Cowork do work, not just words
Claude Code is a terminal agent that plans and executes coding tasks. You probably do not need it directly, but it matters because Cowork is the same engine pointed at non-code work.
Cowork runs in the Claude desktop app: you point it at a folder and hand it a goal. It organizes and renames files, extracts screenshots and PDFs into clean spreadsheets, builds branded reports and presentations, runs scheduled jobs like a weekly sales digest, and works across apps and the browser.
It asks for approval before significant actions, and it can run several tasks in parallel.
For an owner, this is the difference between asking for advice about a messy invoice folder and having the folder sorted, summarized, and totaled while you do something else.
The limits that are not on the pricing page
- Usage caps are real. Limits reset on a rolling window of roughly 5 hours. Pro handles normal daily use; long Cowork sessions or heavy document days can hit the ceiling, which is what the $100-200 Max tiers exist for.
- It still invents details. Grounding in your files cuts errors sharply but does not eliminate them. Anything a customer, bank, or tax authority will read needs a human pass.
- Training on your chats is opt-out on Pro and Max. Anthropic may use consumer-plan conversations to improve models unless you turn the setting off. If client data flows through Claude, check that toggle before anything else.
- Connectors are only as safe as the access you grant. Give read-only scopes where possible and widen them deliberately.
- The files are the work. Projects and workflows are only as good as the documents behind them, and stale documents produce confident wrong answers. Writing down your rules, numbers, and voice, then keeping them current, is the actual project. That setup is the exact job we do at Bamboo Digital in month one, but plenty of owners do a workable version themselves in a few focused evenings.
Bottom line: $17-20/mo buys a capable general assistant. The return depends almost entirely on whether you give it your business to read.
