Price will not decide this, so stop comparing on price
Claude Pro costs $20/month, or $17/month billed annually. Gemini reaches you 2 ways: it is included in Google Workspace Business Standard at $14/user/month, and the standalone Google AI Pro plan is $19.99/month if you want the bigger app experience with more Deep Research and NotebookLM capacity. For 1 person, expect to pay $14-20/month either way.
What actually separates them is placement and grounding. Gemini sits inside the tools you already use. Claude reads your business rules before it writes. Which of those matters more depends on the task, so here is the breakdown, task by task.
Gemini's edge is placement: it is already inside Gmail and Docs
If you write email in Gmail, quote in Docs, and track jobs in Sheets, Gemini is already standing next to the work. It summarizes a long customer thread without you copying anything.
Help me write drafts a reply in place. In Sheets it builds the formula you would otherwise search for. In Meet it takes notes.
None of that needs a new tab, a new login, or a new habit, and for a busy owner the tool you do not have to remember to open is the tool that actually gets used.
The pricing works in its favor too. Business Standard at $14/user/month includes Gemini across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet, and Drive. Business Starter at $7 gets only limited Gemini in Gmail, so if the AI is part of why you are paying, be on Standard. NotebookLM, which lets you load documents and question them, is included as well.
Claude's edge is grounding: it reads your rules before it writes
Claude's core feature for a business is Projects. You create a project and upload your price list, your policies, your refund rules, and 3-4 emails that sound like you.
Every chat inside that project starts from those files. Ask for a reply to an unhappy customer and it quotes your actual policy, not a plausible invention of one.
That is the difference between an AI that writes email and an AI that writes your email. (The longer version of this idea: what a business knowledge base is.)
The Workspace moat is also smaller than it looks. Anthropic's Google Workspace connectors let Claude search and read your Gmail, read and write your Calendar, and read files in Drive. It writes email drafts straight into Gmail; you review and press send. It cannot send anything itself, which for customer-facing mail is a feature, not a gap.
This is the pattern we build for clients at Bamboo Digital: plain files that hold your rules, voice, and numbers, which the AI must read before it drafts anything (how it works).
The verdict depends on the task, not the brand
- Summarizing email threads, meetings, and Drive files you already have: Gemini. It is next to the data and included in your $14 plan.
- Spreadsheet formulas and cleanup in Sheets: Gemini, because it edits in place.
- Customer-facing replies that must follow your policies and sound like you: Claude, in a project loaded with your rules. This is where guessing costs real money.
- Long documents, contracts, and supplier research: Claude. Projects plus Research mode handle big context well, and the source files stay attached to the work.
- Already on Business Standard and money is tight: use the Gemini you are paying for. Add Claude when customer-facing drafting becomes a weekly need.
- Run both: $14 + $20 = $34/month. That is the setup most owner-operators land on once AI stops being an experiment.
The tools will keep changing. The deciding question will not: where do your rules live, and does the AI read them before it speaks? Answer that first and the brand choice mostly makes itself.
